Happy #EarthDay! #LakeNakuru in #Kenya is one of the greatest hubs for #LesserFlamingos in the world. A record number of 1.5 million #flamingos have been arriving to the shallow alkaline shores of the Lake. The birds migrate together between alkaline lakes in the #EastAfricanRiftValley as food sources dry up and breeding season arrives. The flamingos rely on unique environments to lay their eggs that are so salty predators stay well away. 30 days later and thousands of eggs hatch and the flamingos must continue their search for food. Lesser flamingos are slightly different from their greater relatives with rosier pink feathers, a darker beak and crimson legs, and smaller size.
