Nigerian Artists and Afrobeats Making History at Coachella

These days when you spend time anywhere in North America, you will hear the driving vibe of Afrobeats. This genre, a progeny of the earlier style known as “Afrobeat”, a groovy sound that is hard for anyone to remain still while listening. The genre has widened its listening and cultural audience, with global artists continuing to work with Nigerian artists to push the musical tradition with contemporary influences.

There has never been a prouder moment for Afrobeats than the present day. In 2016, Drake’s single “One Dance” featuring Nigerian singer Wizkid became a massive summer hit. Since then, there’s been a surge in popularity for the Afrobeats sound which has led to high demand for the genre. With original works and global collaborations of the Nigerian sound entering into charts in the US and Europe. The sound growth is proving to be successful and the audience is longing to experience them in live performances. This is evident as Coachella has taken note of its strides and booked Nigerian singers Burna Boy and Mr. Eazi. Both Nigerian artists will be functioning within the same space as other global acts. The annual music festival will take place over two weekends: April 12–14 and April 19–21.

Coachella 2019 has arrived, Burna Boy and Mr, Eazi put on a spectacular show. Performing differently, both acts thrilled thousands of the festival-goers at their respective gig slot. The audience was blown away, cheering and vibing to great unique tunes of Afrobeats.
